hand screened silk organza, serged wooly nylon, copper tube hanging system
Running lengths of hand-dyed silk organza through the serger transformed it from flat to dimensional. Tied together, these pieces express my longing to move weightlessly through time and space. To stay fluid yet connected. The shifting forms embody coupling, transition, and life’s flow. Simple knots invite change, growth, and site-specific installation.

Hand dyed printed silk, silk shibori, commercial silk, linen, plastic screen
… shorthand for what’s left unsaid. Floating fabrics and dyed washes meet opaque prints, commercial silks, translucent organza that dash, pause, and move across the plane. Intersecting layers build depth, tracing the movement of my hand and ideas as life moves at its own pace.

I responded to the strong black line of the serged seam against the varied dyed patterning. It moves through the three different weights of silk emphasizing how each weave responds to the structure of the stitch. Each piece is connected with hand stitching to its neighbor and then loosely held to soft backing. The black line provides both visual and actual movement and structure. It Pulses.

Humans create divisions, boundaries, fences, Nature does not respect this. These are the concepts I played with using dye and stitch to create a mono print. The marks immediately suggested flowers and the blue geometric lines fences. Hanging these nearly weightless multiple layers of silk increased my sense of the airy open atmosphere of roses climbing and blurring the rigid unnatural boundary.

Jitterbug, swinging balance, fast rhythmic moves coming together and then separating. Interlocking contour lines provide the armature for edge shaded shapes of complimentary colors creating balance, movement and depth. The separate layers are joined at the top and with accents of stitching scattered throughout. This fast moving composition blurs the boundaries between the figures and space.

Images of gears/cogs hand screen printed on layers of sheer silk suggest the incongruity between the structure of the machinery and the diaphanous silk. I love the contrast of the geometric hard edges with the delicate and amorphous colors of the hand dyed silk. The stitches allow me to bring more drawing into the image. Machine woven silk is now subjected to the artist’s hand.
I find smoke spewing industrial stacks ominous. I digitally printed an image of The Stacks on sheer organza then combined my itajime shibori and screened silks to create this piece. Some are dyed greens that reference Sheele's arsenic based dye. This collage ties together my sense of the dangers of the Victorian and later Industrial revolution and luxurious wealth. Luxury founded in Industry.

Commercial Silk Drapery Samples, Inkjet Photo on Silk Organza, Embroidery Thread, Push Pins
Silk drapery/upholstery samples provided my inspiration. I built a collage of these and the digital photo of The Bethlehem Stacks printed on silk organza. The feather stitch ties in the Victorian timing of industrial smoke stacks and the popularity of crazy quilts made from small pieces of precious silk. Punched holes and push pins refer to mass production and sketck/sample nature of this piece.

Entangled began as one of several mono prints using ovoid or enclosed forms. As the piece evolved, I over-printed and added collaged pieces of hand printed silk organza, delicately stitched and embroidered. I had been looking at Louise Bourgeois and the inclusion of the remnants from some serged edges added the menace I was feeling from this work.

Enclosed is one of a series mono prints using enclosed or ovoid forms as a starting point. I began by drawing into thickened dye and printing it on silk. Layers of patterns were printed next, followed by direct drawing with dye. Previously dyed silk organza was layered onto the piece and the surface was embellish with stitching, beads and couched thread. This womb-like form feels safely enclosed.

This woven and heavily embellished image began as two separate surface designed pieces torn down and woven together. The cloche shape began to appear after they were woven and the crocheted serger remnants were applied. Additional dupioni was woven into the surface and was augmented with hand stitching. The visual rhythm captures the jazz that was popular with cloche hats in the 1920s.
